2005 - A Banner Year
CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to the Intermediate/Advanced Students of GREENBELT DOG TRAINING who had a record year in 2005 in charity events. They conducted:
Also, bi-monthly visits to the Playrooms and Physic Ward at Children's Hospital with Special Therapy Dogs have been very successful to bringing smiles to the beautiful faces of the sick children. Many of these therapy dogs perform special doggie tricks and canine musical freestyle dancing routines to dazzle the audience.
Not only are these students members of the Parade Marching Drill Team and have won many trophies and awards, but they also volunteer for other events. On Sunday, March 13, 2005, the Greenbelt Dog Training Parade Marching Drill Team won a trophy in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Constitution Avenue, in Washington, DC. The Intermediate/Advance students marched with their "little darlings," who wore shamrock-emblazoned bandanas and dazzled the crowd with their marching drill maneuvers and super dog tricks along the parade route. The Parade Team marched in six other parades in 2005.
Most importantly, these students and their dogs eagerly volunteer for other events in the community and participate in demonstrations and shows at nursing homes, children's schools, and other service facilities, including a "Father's Day Celebration" at the Veterans Administration Nursing Home, and two annual fundraising benefits for the Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad.
You can see why "Uncle Allie" is so proud and blessed to work with and know such a fine group of students and their wonderful dogs.

"Robinson" the Sheltie, and Darlene
CONGRATULATIONS to "Robinson" and Darlene who performed in the production
of "Annie Get Your Gun." The Montgomery College, MD students shared the
spotlight in the Montgomery College Summer Dinner Theater 2005 production.
"Robinson" and Darlene were featured in a canine dancing routine to the
music of "There's No Business Like Show Business."
Darlene stated that, "There is answer to prayer" because she spent most
of the day before the show praying. She was so surprised that Robinson
did so well with the unexpected surprises that are always a part of "show
business."
She stated, "Everything was changed on stage the night of the show from
what we experienced during the rehearsals. We had to enter the stage when
it was pitch black. They added many props on the stage that we had to
work around without telling us how crowded the stage would be during the
show. We also didn't know that fake gun shots would be fired during the
show -- but Robinson worked like a champ.
"As we danced, he took the hankie out of my pocket as planned, weaved
under one leg, did his half/backs through my legs, spins, bows and kisses.
The audience loved it and again I am almost euphoric because this was
very hard for him. I figure if he could do that, he can do anything! I
give all credit to the Lord and to Greenbelt Dog Training and Pam Watson
for her brilliant choreography and patient encouragement . We had lots
of people stop and tell us what a beautiful smart dog he was."
Uncle Allie, Auntie Adele Lee and the Intermediate/Advanced students of
Greenbelt Dog Training are extremely proud of Robinson -- our "Mr. Showbiz."

Hyattsville Parade
Yes, our Parade Marching Drill Team won "TWO AWARDS" in the City of
Hyattsville, Maryland's 119th Anniversary Parade on Saturday, April 16,
2005. The first award was the "Mayor's Cup." We were told that this "cup"
is special because the Mayor of the City of Hyattsville picks his favorite
group in the parade and presents this award to them. The second award
was the "Judge's Award" which is a 1st Place award.
Needless to say, a GRRREAT time was had by all. The comments from the
crowd were thrilling to hear, "Look at that, he told them to turn and
they all turned and the dogs turned with them." Besides the special dog
tricks that wowed the crowd by "HERMY," "MURPHY" and "SPARKY," they were
stunned to see our "star attraction" nine year old Harriette, marching
with the family dog, "PÉLÉ." We kept hearing, "Look at that
little girl, look at that little girl."
We are in the middle of our "Parade Season" and we love every minute of
it. More parades to come and even though trophies and awards are not given
in some community parades, we will be marching and performing in as many
as we can. When the people along the parade routes give us compliments,
our marchers are known to tell them, "Get a dog and come have a good time
with us."
BEST PET UNIT Trophy
St. Patrick Day Parade, Washington, DC.
We are proud to announce that on Sunday, March 13, 2005 the Greenbelt
Dog Training's Marching Drill Team won BEST PET UNIT trophy in the Annual
St. Patrick Day Parade on Constitution Ave., in Washington, DC.
The Intermediate/Advance students who marched with their "little darlings"
who wore bandannas with shamrocks on them dazzled the crowd with their
marching drill maneuvers and super dog tricks along the parade route.
There were times when the weather was too bad in Washington, DC for us
to march and do our doggie tricks, but this year even though the weather
was cool, a good time was had by all.
"Uncle Allie" is so proud of his students and he continues to plan even
more exciting maneuvers as we look forward to the parades in the future.
Greenbelt Flyers' First
Flyball Tournament
Written by Sally, Co-Captain, GDT Greenbelt Flyers
The Greenbelt Flyers, the first ever GBDT flyball team, competed in
their First Flyball
Tournament, Feb 19-20, 2005 in Leesburg, VA. The tournament
was hosted by the Leesburg group, the Beltway Bandits.
We’ve basically been a "self-taught" group, with very little assistance
from experienced flyball folks. So, we were nervous, to say the least.
Our first few runs were disastrous….dogs running across lanes, etc. The
new environment, strange dogs and exciting tournament atmosphere were
proving too much for some of our dogs. Did our team fall apart? No! Our
team rallied around each other, provided morale support and strategized.
We'd been told that the flyball community is supportive and that proved
to be an understatement. As we struggled to figure out how to handle our
situation, we found ourselves surrounded by encouraging people and, without
having to ask, we were blessed with two "coaches" who joined us to help
our members whose dogs were having a hard time. They didn't just help
in one race, they joined us for the rest of the tournament! And, with
their help, things finally started to turn around.
Finally, we managed to get all four dogs down to the flyball box and as
the last dog was heading back to the finish line, for what would be our
first clean run, imagine our amazement as we realized that almost everyone
in the building had gathered ringside to cheer us on! Were we going to
win? No. But that didn't matter to anyone. That didn't lessen the cheering
screams. What mattered was our dogs were improving and we were finally
having success. This wasn't about who was beating who. This was about
our dogs running flyball successfully and everyone there being happy with
us and for us! Now, that's the true competitive spirit!
We tried hard, we ran hard, we soaked up every bit of support and guidance
the many wonderful people offered, we watched, we learned, we laughed
and we cried! But most of all....OUR DOGS HAD
FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And, despite our rocky start,
we did win two races and all of the dogs managed to earn some flyball
title points!
Two teams offered to do scrimmages with us! Yea! One in Baltimore and
one in Springfield!
Congratulations, Hermie & LaVerne, Robinson & Darlene, Tank & Mike (standing
in for Joan), Talen & Ed, and Aussie & Sally!

LIVE INTERVIEW on Channel 5
From: The Greenbelt Dog Training's Parade Marching Drill Team
We were in the Kensington Labor Day Parade on September 6, 2004, AND we
were invited by the Kensington parade organizers to be interviewed at
8:45 a.m. by Holly Morris of FOX 5 Morning News before the parade began.
Of course, all of us were there at 8:15 in our uniforms, smiles and doggies
with bandannas -- ready to action!
Every parade we have done in Kensington has been a wonderful experience.
They love us just as much as we love them. It was LIVE on Channel 5 but
many of us taped it. It showed some of the people who had their dogs doing
dog tricks. As ALLIE LEE, as Drill Instructor, was being interviewed,
the rest of us marched around him and Holly in a big circle: "left ---,
left ---, left, right, left --- . . ." She wanted us to sing our "I love
my dog" song as we marched -- AND WE DID.
We're just a bunch of "big hams" and loved every minute of it. Kensington
does not give trophies each year, but the LIVE interview was better than
a trophy. It showed ALL of us, even our helpers standing on the side --
this made ALLIE very happy.
We know our Parade Marching Drill Team is unique and being asked to do
a LIVE interview is proof of how popular and respected we have become.
